Boards of Education, Teachers, Students & Parents
Every late August and early September we now have here in Toronto and possibly other places in this country and/or others one or more organizations that give out FREE school supplies to “the needy” or to those in “poverty”. This is taken advantage of and abused be too many, some consciously and others not!
While growing up, from the first day of grade one to my University days I rarely needed any new supplies come September. I always kept what was good for the next year. There was always plenty of paper, pencils, binders, pens, padlock, and so forth left over from the previous year. At times I had to buy duo-tangs or another binder but rarely more then two or three things. Of course we had to buy paper every now and then but nothing was wasted. Many supplies (binders, pens) were easily found year round from various sources. Places that go out of business or are just changing product lines. If people from other places that use up every square centimeter of space of every paper would see how sick this practice is.
Having worked at a Superintendent as well as keeping an eye on the garbage rooms I see that many are just throwing out everything at the end of every school season. Many, I have a feeling “know” that there will be new “free” stuff available come next year. Others think that their parents could afford new things. Some parents probably think that it is not only okay to buy new everything once September comes along, but a tradition or right.
To see people who obviously cannot afford to buy new clothe for their children every September (and Xmas) think that it has to be done have to change attitude. As long as the clothe are respectable (not torn or too worn) and clean is all that counts. To “stop being a fool for fashion” has to start at the parents. At other times it is the grand-parent(s) with too much wealth!
During my last years June 25th walk, I passed by a school on Bathurst St. just north of College St.. It must have been the last recessof the last day. From across the street I saw two students, one younger gent and a Changeling (9-13 year-old ready to learn developing female) throw their combination locks onto the street. To be more specific, trying to land them on the streetcar tracks! That was/is dangerous. A streetcar could send such an object flying with such force as to seriously injure someone and/or cause a major traffic mishap. I did not say anything to the teachers but should have! September comes and they will tell their parents that ” lost it and I need a new one”!
As the time again is approaching maybe ALL the teachers should have a good talk to the students and/or send a letter/note to every parent saying that all that could be salvaged/saved should be! Mind you the stores may not like it nor the Governments as they like people to spend as it helps the economy!
